Essential information for hiring a helper in Singapore
What are the requirements for hiring a foreign domestic worker (FDW) in Singapore?
To hire a helper, you must be at least 21 years old, financially capable, and have no adverse records with MOM. You’ll also need to attend the Employer Orientation Program (EOP) if it’s your first time.
What is the cost of hiring a domestic helper?
Typical costs include the maid agency fee, MOM levy, work permit application, insurance, medical check-ups and the helper’s monthly salary.
How long is the contract period for a helper?
Most helpers are hired on a two-year contract, which can be renewed based on mutual agreement.
Do I need to provide accommodation and meals for my helper?
Yes, employers must provide acceptable accommodation, three meals a day and basic necessities like toiletries and rest days.
How many rest days is a helper entitled to?
Helpers are entitled to at least one rest day per week, or employers must compensate them in lieu with agreed payment.
What are my responsibilities as an employer under MOM regulations?
You are responsible for your helper’s well-being, prompt salary payments, safe working conditions, insurance coverage, and adherence to Singapore’s laws and MOM guidelines.
Can I give my helper tasks outside of domestic work?
No. Helpers are only permitted to perform domestic duties. It’s illegal to assign tasks outside the household or for commercial use.
